Bio:
Mary Jones Mellett has been in the hair/beauty enhancement industry since 1989, when she enrolled in school while working part time at Bang-Bang, a small east village salon in New York City.
After graduation and receiving her cosmetology license from the state of New York, Mary went uptown to Stephen Knoll, an exclusive Madison Avenue salon, where she completed a 3–year intensive training program focusing on hair color and chemical services. She also made a point of joining in on all haircutting and styling classes. Her dedication did not go unnoticed: Stephen Knoll asked her to accompany him on photo shoots and fashion shows.
Branching out on her own, Mary starting working out of her small east village studio apartment while still employed full time at Stephen Knoll. There, she built up a private clientele base, while continuing to work on her freelance career
Within three months after leaving Stephen Knoll, Mary found she was too busy to continue working from her apartment, so in the early months of 1995 she began working out of Valerie’s, a beautiful hair salon space on the lower east side of Manhattan, not far from her home.
In June of 1997, Mary, along with her friend and co-worker, Randall Seale opened ULTRA hair salon on east 4th street in the east village, just around the corner from where Mary started building her business just a short time earlier.
Within two years, ULTRA had expanded to double its original size. In May of 2006, ULTRA moved several blocks south to the lower east side, into a newly renovated space, four times the square footage of the original salon.
But as all great things come to an end, ULTRA hair salon closed March 24th, 2012.
Mary is currently working at SPACE in SoHo, New York City, as well as, out of her Sullivan County, NY home. Mary is also available for on location work.
